Good food, real cards, zero fuss.
Joysola is the kind of place you come for a proper plate of fire-cooked food and stay because a friendly poker table has your name on it. In-person poker nights, a kitchen that takes the season seriously, and a bar that actually knows its whisky — that's the whole idea.
A grill house that happens to deal a very decent hand
We didn't set out to build a casino. We built a restaurant we wanted to eat in — then noticed our regulars kept lingering after dessert. So we put in proper poker tables, hired dealers who actually teach the game, and turned the back room into the Green Felt Room.
The rule is simple: nobody plays poker hungry, and nobody eats dinner rushed.
— Danny Kowalski, founder
Everything on the menu comes from within 120 km — Otago farms, the Saturday market, and two very stubborn fishermen we love.
Plates worth putting the cards down for
Ask any regular: the poker players time their breaks around the kitchen, not the other way round.

45-day ribeye
Aged in-house, finished over manuka coals, bordelaise you'd drink if nobody watched.
House signature
Blue cod, smoked butter
Line-caught off the Otago coast that morning. The poker room orders this more than anything else.
Today's catch
Charred market veg
Whatever the farm box held at 6am, blistered hard and finished with koji butter.
Plant-poweredA poker table runs better when the kitchen runs hot. That's not a metaphor — it's our scheduling.

The Dealer's Board
A sharing board built for the rail: charcuterie, pickles, warm bread — one hand free for your cards.
See the menuPoker nights, done the social way
Our poker room runs Thursday to Saturday — dealer-hosted Texas Hold'em, a genuine beginners' table, and absolutely no online anything. You sit down, you meet people, you play cards. The way poker was before screens got involved.
Learn-to-play table
Never touched a chip? First-timer sessions every Thursday — the dealer walks you through a real poker hand.
Monthly deep-stack
The serious one. Proper structure, season leaderboard, and a poker trophy the regulars genuinely fight over.
Nights worth planning around
Social poker night
Low-pressure poker, table-side food service, and the friendliest buy-in in Dunedin.
18+Deep-stack tournament
Our flagship monthly poker event — long levels, season points, bragging rights.
18+Whisky & cards
A guided dram flight between poker levels. Yes, it's as good as it sounds.
18+Eighty whiskies and a cocktail list with opinions
Sam runs the bar the way Mere runs the grill — short list, strong opinions. The house old fashioned gets poured at the poker rail more than anywhere else in the room, and the non-alc list isn't an afterthought.
- Felt-side service
Drinks come to the poker tables — you never fold a good hand for a refill. - Otago-first cellar
Central Otago pinot leads the list, with a rotating sommelier's pick each month. - Zero-proof section
Seedlip builds, house kombucha, and a clarified "no-groni" that regulars order by name.

Sam's rule: "If the poker's tense, the drinks stay simple. If it's a party, I get weird with the bitters."

What the regulars say
4.8 / 5
Across 1,200+ guest reviews — the poker nights get named almost as often as the ribeye.
Came for a mate's birthday dinner, ended up at the beginners' poker table till closing. The dealer taught three of us the game and the kitchen sent out hot chips mid-hand. Perfect night.
I play the Saturday deep-stack every month. Properly run poker — good structure, honest dealers, and the food service at the table is dangerous for the waistline.
“The rare venue where the restaurant would survive without the poker — and the poker room would thrive without the restaurant. Together they're a problem for your free time.”
